15 Puzzle: from controls to your first round

Choose a round of 15 Puzzle and settle into its rules. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Use the example below to understand a decision.

A small practice goal

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Keep the objective visible.

Your objective

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

How a round unfolds

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Using the playing area

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use one clear input at a time.

Follow the example

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Look for the relevant detail.

One detail worth checking

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Check the rule before repeating the action. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
